Beacon Health System breaks ground on new health facility

Beacon Health System held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Beacon Health & Fitness facility Thursday morning.

The facility is in Mishawaka on Beacon Parkway off Capital Avenue and the I-80 toll road exit.

The health facility will have the latest advances in health and fitness as well as the prevention and management of disease and injuring including physical therapy, sports medicine, cardiac fitness, exercise for arthritis, yoga for cancer patients and survivors, according to Beacon Health System.

"This is going to be a medical model. That's important. It's going to have an incredible broad range of health as well as rehabilitation, prevention and fitness types of services all under one roof," said Phil Newbold, CEO of Beacon Health System.

The facility will include cardiovascular equipment, strength equipment, lap pool, running/walking track,, personal trainers and a sports performance clinic.

This $15 million project will expand upon the services that have been available at the Memorial Health & Lifestyle Center (HLC) for 35 years. The HLC location in downtown South Bend will also be renamed Beacon Health & Fitness and members will be allowed to use both facilities.

The new facility is set to open in 2016.
