Benton Harbor family escapes house fire

Benton Harbor, MI – The new public safety force was put to the test early Thursday morning.

The fire started around 10 a.m.

It happened on the 700 block of Broadway Street.

When ABC 57’s Tony Spehar got on the scene fire crews were still working to fight the flames.

The man who lived in the home rushed to the scene from work to find his home up in flames.

"I saw the house was up in black smoke, just black smoke rolling out from it," Melvin Transou said as we watched his home burn.

Transou’s wife and four kids were home at the time of the fire, all made it out safely.

No word as of Thursday night on what started the fire.
