BENTON HARBOR, Mich.--- Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad responded to concerns from residents about a video showing a Benton Harbor police officer allegedly punching a tazed suspect. At Tuesday's city commission meeting, Mayor Muhammad assured residents that the matter was being looked into.
Tuesday night's meeting was packed with Benton Harbor residents who had seen the video and wanted city leaders to take action. People in attendance called for an investigation, a change in the police department's use of force policy, and for the officer involved to be disciplined.
"We are tired of people being hurt, killed, ignored. We are in the center of a storm," said one resident. The city commission suspended meeting protocol in order to give Mayor Muhammad a chance to respond to the complaints.
"Thank you for your concern, thank you for coming out and we most definitely will address the matter, swiftly," said the mayor. A formal complaint has been filed with the City Manager and the incident is currently being reviewed.
