Benton Harbor officials propose new millage

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Benton Harbor city officials are scrambling to get their public safety department out of financial trouble. And they are working to get new millage proposals passed or create a special tax assessment.

A town hall meeting was held Tuesday night to talk about the proposals that include 10 mills each and worth about $1.4 million.

City commissioners urged people to vote yes on May 7.

If the proposal passes, it would help make up for some of the money lost.

Back in November, people voted against another proposal that aimed to help with the city's financial troubles.

In the meeting, officials said homeowners would actually save more money with the mills compared to a special assessment.
