Berrien County police change procedures following boat accident

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- Berrien County police are changing their procedures on Lake Michigan after marine officers flipped their boat.

A large wave capsized the boat in October, but an internal investigation determined the boat should have been able to handle the conditions on the lake.

In the future, police will need to take those erratic waves into account.

"Lieutenant Kurtz basically got caught out in Lake Michigan as the conditions escalated, focusing on the weather and focusing on a person in the water,” said Chief Deputy Mick Bradley with the Berrien County Sheriff's Department.

Damage to the boat is estimated at more than $50,000.
