MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Mishawaka’s credited Christian college will soon be called by a different name. Bethel College will operate as Bethel University beginning May 6th, 2019, according to President Gregg Chenoweth, Ph.D.
The name change was decided after nearly a decade of contemplating by Bethel’s Board of Trustees.
Bethel’s Board of Trustees decided after four months of research from alumni, current students, staff, and members from the community, they would make the college a university in the spring semester of 2019.
According to President Chenoweth, the logo and seal will be updated following the new title. The mascot, motto, and school colors will remain the same.
“The change over from college to university happening now is a direct reflection of where the college is currently at.” Student Body President, Paul Cooke, said.
The college is allowing graduates of 2018-2019 year can decide to have College or University on their diploma.
Bethel officials are allowing alumni to get a new diploma if they would prefer it to say University.
“When we announced this in chapel there was literally an eruption of applause. So generally it’s fair to say students have received this well and are excited about it.” President Chenoweth said.
