Big rig tire crashes into semi windshield on toll road

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – Police say one man is lucky to be alive after two semis collided on the Indiana Toll Road.

It happened around 12:30 Wednesday morning. Police say a semi was pulling a trailer and headed east down the toll road a few miles from this Mishawaka entrance when a tire came off the axle and bounced right into the windshield of a semi driving right behind.

Police say if the tire would have bounced and smashed into the glass just a few inches to the right, the driver would have died.

The driver of the semi in the front was not hurt. Two people were in the second semi. Police say the driver was pretty shaken up and received some scrapes from the broken glass from the windshield. The passenger did not suffer any injuries.

Troopers say the driver refused treatment but police say just a few inches made a big difference.
