Body of Anastacia Cortes Reyes found

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department says the body of Anastacia Cortes Reyes was found in a field Tuesday night. She was reported missing in August 2014.

Reyes Cortes was reported missing on August 28, 2014 after she failed to return from a trip to a local grocery store.

A week later, her van was discovered 12 miles from where she was last seen. It had been set on fire.

Deputies say her skeletal remains were recovered by the sheriff's department, the coroner and anthropologists from a field in the 55000 block of CR 27 Tuesday evening.

"Late morning early afternoon today the remains were identified through dental records," said Sergeant Chris Snyder of the Elkhart Police Department.

Her body was found several miles from her last known location.

"We don’t know how long the body was out there. Nor do we have a cause or manner of death," said Snyder.

Police say with each passing day, cases can get more difficult to solve.

They are hoping witnesses will come forward so they can work to piece together what happened to Reyes Cortes because there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

"We don’t know if there was foul play involved or if she died of natural causes or what led up to her death. And what led to her body being put where it was located," said Snyder.

Anthropologists will examine her remains to see if they can determine a cause or manner of death.

Four months after her disappearance, her husband asked for the public's help in finding his wife.
