Bomb squad called to downtown South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Bomb Squad was called downtown Friday afternoon for a "suspicious item" outside of the Memorial Health & Lifestyle Center.

The report was called in just after 1 p.m.

Ashley O'Chap, Public Information Officer for the South Bend Police Department, said the found item does not pose a threat.

Investigators say the item was a piece of equipment left behind by a worker.

Crews have since cleared the scene.

UPDATE: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the bomb squad was called to the St. Joseph County courthouse. The story has been updated to reflect the correction information. We apologize for the error.
