UPDATE (11:20 p.m.): The Elkhart Police Department confirm that one of the officers shot earlier this evening has been released from the hospital after being treated.

The other officer injured is said to be in stable condition and remains at the hospital.

Chief Milanese has released a statement saying, "In this horrific situation, words cannot express the pain felt in our community when a tragic incident like this happens. This pain is especially felt by the victim’s families, the responding officers, the families of the wounded officers, and all the witnesses to this tragic incident. I want to thank our local law enforcement partners, including the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police, for their support and assistance during this time. I ask for the community to continue to keep all those effected by this horrific event in your thoughts and prayers.”

The names of the suspect, victims, and involved officers are being withheld at this time, pending family notification.

"Our hearts are broken in Elkhart tonight. Please continue to pray for the victims including our two police officers who were wounded, our heroic first responders, and those at the incident," said Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson.

"There is no immediate danger to the public. If there were any witnesses or if you have information, please contact the Elkhart County Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825."

UPDATE (10:06 p.m.): City of Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson has released in a statement in response to the shooting stating, "Our hearts are broken in Elkhart tonight. UPDATE (9:58 p.m.): The Elkhart Police Department is responding to concerns from residents unable to access their apartments at the River Point West apartments due to the investigation tape from the Martin's Supermarket investigation.

The department tells residents of River Point apartments that they can go through the Fitness Center in the Junior Achievement Dr. building and an officer will escort them to their apartment.

UPDATE (7:24 p.m.) The Elkhart Police Department has confirmed that five people have been shot at the Martin's Supermarket in Elkhart.

Three people have been confirmed killed, one of which includes the suspect.

Two officers were shot and are in stable condition at the hospital for treatment.

There is no current threat to the public at this time. 

UPDATE: (6:54 p.m.): The Emergency Room entrance at Memorial Hospital in South Bend is currently blocked off by police, something we've seen before when the hospital is receiving trauma patients in shootings.

It is unclear at this time if this is connected to the shooting at the Martin's Supermarket in Elkhart.

ORIGINAL: ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart Police have responded to the Martins Supermarket on Jackson Boulevard in Elkhart.

It is confirmed to be a shooting situation with injuries unable to be confirmed at this time.

It is asked that the public avoids the area at this time, as the scene is still active.

We will update as we confirm more information.
