Elkhart County Homicide Unit investigating officer-involved fatal shooting

ELKHART, Ind. - Police are investigating a shooting involving a police officer in Elkhart.

It happened around 5:30 am Wednesday morning, near the Big Lots on West Hively Avenue. Originally, police received two calls on a man allegedly trying to throw a bike into a window of the Handy Spot Liquors.

When officers arrived at the scene, police found a man in the area and approached him.

During the interaction, two officers allegedly shot at the man. Two other officers were at the scene but did not fire their weapons.

Officers gave the suspect first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A handgun was allegedly found on the man, but police are investigating if he shot his weapon.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit has taken over this investigation. The two officers who fired their weapons were placed on paid administrative leave. All officers involved are being interviewed by the ECHU.

The identity of the suspect has not been released. Police are still working to confirm his name and age.

Businesses in the direct area will remain closed for the time, but schools in the area are not closed.
