UPDATE: One arrested in connection with body found in St. Joseph River, more details revealed

UPDATE: In the probable cause affidavit obtained from Elkhart Superior Court, police say they conducted an interview with a witness on July 17, who stated they were close with Anthony "Tony" Null and were mutual friends with Michael Hawkins, whom they'd known for a while.

The witness stated they went to Burger King with Null that morning before returning to their campsite off E. Beardsley Avenue, west of Johnson Street Bridge and the train bridge. Hawkins was also staying at that campsite.

The witness said they were sitting in front of the two men when they began to argue about synthetic marijuana and coffee. The witness went on to say they heard Hawkins tell Null that he would shut him up.

Null was then heard telling Hawkins to just pull the trigger and that he doesn’t give a "f***." The witness said that's when they heard one gunshot and looked back to see Null slouched over and bleeding.

Hawkins allegedly told the witness not to "f***ing" move and not say anything before grabbing Null by his belt and taking him to sand next to the river. Hawkins then allegedly told the witness to help him "move this shit in the canoe," at which point the witness was able to run away.

Detectives later searched the campsite and located a pop bottle with red substance with the appearance of blood at the base. Next to the bottle police say they found a leaf with a substance appearing to be blood.

Detectives also found a trail of red substance with the appearance of blood leading from the bottle to the sand next to the creek that flows into the St. Joseph River. In the sand next to the creek, authorities observed what appeared to be drag marks.

On July 18, Hawkins was brought in for questioning. He was read his Miranda Rights and agreed to speak. Hawkins told investigators he'd been camping with the witness and Null for about five or six days.

Hawkins denied anything physical occurring between Null and himself, and added he never saw the witness hurt him physically.

Hawkins told investigators he'd packed up his belongings in a red canoe and went down the river leaving it in a backyard off Potawatomi Drive after receiving coffee from the witness on July 16. He denied being with the witness and Null on July 17.

After asking the homeowner's permission, investigators found the red canoe on its side behind a residence in the 300 block of Potawatomi Drive next to the St. Joseph River.

A search warrant was granted by the Elkhart Superior Court to seize and search the property from the canoe. Investigators found an Android cell phone in the cup holder of a red camping chair located under the canoe.

Detectives say the cell phone's home screen had messages directed to Null, indicating the phone belonged to him.

Investigators say the red camping chair was also covered in red substance with the appearance of blood along with pieces of paper found under the canoe with the name "Michael Hawkins."

Detectives were able to locate surveillance video from a business west of the camping site, which showed on July 17, at 7:23 a.m., a white man in a red canoe with black tape, that matches the red canoe with black tape found near Potawatomi Drive, leaving the area of the campsite, floating west on the river.

On July 21, evidence technicians with the Elkhart Police Department were able to locate red spots on clothing that was previously seized with a granted search warrant from Hawkins. They conducted tests on the red spots which gave positive presumptive results for blood.

On July 22, a detective spoke with another witness who was standing outside on July 17, at a residence in the 100 block of N. Elkhart Avenue across from the campsite. The witness told police they heard two men argue and then a single gunshot.

Null's autopsy found he'd suffered a single gunshot wound to his face.

ORIGINAL STORY: ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Homicide Unit reports 59-year-old Michael E. Hawkins Jr. was arrested Wednesday in connection with the homicide of Anthony Null.

Null's body was found with a gunshot wound in the St. Joseph River near Beardsley Avenue on July 17.

Authorities say a probable cause review of the facts and circumstances supporting Hawkins' arrest was conducted by the Magistrate.

Hawkins is currently being held without bond.

Formal charges are to be filed Friday, and Hawkins’ initial hearing in the Elkhart Circuit Court is set for July 31.

ABC57’s Annie Kate spoke with neighbors in the area where the body was found.

Elkhart Resident Kadin Sobkowiak said:

"I thought it was maybe an overdose or something over there by the bridge, or something, I don't know. But when I had found out it was a dead body pulled out of the water, it was shocking. Considering that my nephew lives here, makes me feel a little uneasy."

Elkhart Resident Kathy Royer telling ABC57's Annie Kate:

"The river is a very peaceful place for us, that's one of the reasons why we like to live here, and to see it as a scene of unrest, it's just hard." and "The neighbors who were here told us that they had found a body." --- "Just that first information was anxiety-producing, pretty seriously."

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities say no further details will be released at this time.
