Buchanan City Fire Department giving out free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

BUCHANAN, Mich. -- The Buchanan City Fire Department has and will continue to provide free carbon monoxide and smoke detectors checks as well as new devices and installation, if requested.

Anyone in the Buchanan city limits can request a free carbon monoxide detector check, and if there are any issues, crews will provide you with and install a new detector.

"If you are a senior and need assistance with installation, someone will help you to ensure the detectors are set-up and working correctly," the department said in a Facebook post. "If you or anyone living in your home are hearing impaired and/or visually impaired the fire department will order detectors with a flashing light attached and the visually impaired ones will have an attachment that the person can put under their pillow and plug into an outlet that will shake their bed to wake them up."

Anyone residing in the state of Michigan can receive a free smoke detector and have it installed as well.

For more information, or to check to see if you are eligible, call Tammy Ross at the Buchanan Area Senior Center at 269-695-7119, or the fire department at 269-695-5592.

"We will need to know your first and last name, address, telephone number and how many floors you have in your home," Officials said. "Someone will be in touch with you to schedule an installation date and time."

If you live outside Buchanan city limits, call your local fire department to see if they have a similar program.
