Burned railway garden restored

This weekend, Fernwood Botanical Garden will open a brand new exhibit that visitors might find familiar.

Several months back in October, there was complete devastation at Fernwood’s main attraction.

The Railway Garden had been burnt to the ground but now a new railway garden exhibit is just days away from opening to the public.

On October 21, an electrical fire destroyed Fernwood’s most popular exhibit, leaving only burnt wood and rubble.

Executive Director Carol Line called the exhibit the little train that could for its role in helping Fernwood get through a rough economic time in 2009.

That train was derailed during that October fire, but now Line says this new exhibit, which consists of fan favorites like the waterfall, but also has new features like additional levels, is better than ever.

“It feels like Christmas all over again being able to have it back, it was a winter of working out details with our insurance company and details with the designers to ensure that we’d be able to open on time to open on May 1, that’s our seasonal date every year,” said Line.
