Central Ave. in Indiana Dunes will be closed until Dec. 24

INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK, Ind. – Central Ave. in Indiana Dunes National Park will be closed for a beach nourishment project on the national park’s Central Avenue Beach.

The project, funded by the Army Corps of Engineers, will replace sand on the beach that’s been lost because of severe erosion caused by high water levels in Lake Michigan.

This project will place 56,000 tons of sand on the beach.

Central Ave. will be closed until Dec. 24, 2020 from US Highway 12 to the avenue’s northern endpoint at the beach.

The beach itself has been closed throughout the summer and fall because of dangerous conditions caused by the erosion.
