Changes are coming to Eddy Street to control late night crowds

SOUTH BEND, Ind - Eddy Street between Angela Boulevard and Napoleon Street will close for certain hours on weekend nights.

The busy thoroughfare with late night hangout spots and restaurants will close from 12:30am to 4:00am whenever management feels it’s necessary.

ABC57 has confirmed that Indianapolis based Kite Realty received approval from the city of South Bend to shutdown traffic on Eddy Street.

The action is brought on by multiple late-night incidents that occurred on Eddy Street.

“I think for businesses especially a place like Brothers or O’Rourke’s 12:00a.m. To 4:00a.m. is a pretty prime time for their business especially Friday and Saturday night and then Five Guy’s and Blaze Pizza too would also be effected there” Michael Griffin of South Bend said.

Despite her concern for safety frequent visitor of Eddy Street Carrie Shank says this change will affect people just trying to have a good time and college students.

“It might be a good idea like during the summertime because College students are away but during the school year it might be kind of tough because I know as a college kid myself I really enjoyed eating late and getting food especially studying for finals I was up until the wee hours of the morning and having this shutdown during the school year would be pretty tough” Carrie Shank said.

ABC57 reached out to businesses on Eddy Street Commons for an official comment but they did not want to be a part of the story.
