Chicago reporting a 46 percent increase of skunks

CHICAGO, Ill.--That foul odor in the air may be an increase in skunks.

Chicago is reporting a 46 percent rise in the number of skunks. Trappers say skunk encounters are keeping them extremely busy.

Over all they say it is relatively easy for humans to avoid skunks, but if your pet takes a direct hit, it is important that you take some immediate steps.

"Flush their eyes and mouth out with copious amounts of water,” said Lombard Veterinary Hospital's Dr. Jason Olech. “The sulfur in the excretion is tough on the mucous membranes and the mouth."

Experts say the population growth is part of a normal prey/predator cycle that will likely reverse itself as competition for food increases.
