Child’s body recovered in Hammond pond

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. – Indiana State Police recovered a one-year-old girl's body from a pond near the Kennedy Avenue ramp of I-80 in Hammond on Thursday.

Troopers arrived at the scene for a report of a person in a retention pond. When they arrived, troopers spoke to a construction worker who showed them what appeared to be a body in the pond.

The Hammond Fire Department arrived at the scene, immediately entered the water and removed the body.

Troopers realized that the body was a Black one-year-old girl. She was deceased.

Police are currently following up leads and working with the Major Crimes Assistance Team, which involves multiple agencies in Illinois.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased girl as Jaclyn Angel Dobbs, a one-year-old from Deerfield, Ill. Dobbs’ family has been notified.

 An autopsy will be conducted on Friday to determine how she died.

This is an active investigation.
