Church fire in South Bend Monday night

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A fire damaged a church in the 200 block of North Johnson Street on Monday night, the South Bend Fire Department reported.

At 9:54 p.m., the Fire Department responded to a church fire at 215 N. Johnson Street.

When crews arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the building.

Fire crews entered the church and made a quick attack on the fire but soon discovered deteriorating conditions.

The fire attack was switched to defensive operations until conditions improved and crews could return inside the building.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire from the outside and returned inside to check for hot spots and finish the operations.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation.
