City of Elkhart looking for public input on community development plans during April 4 meeting

ELKHART, Ind. - Leaders with the City of Elkhart are asking for residents' input on a draft of the annual Community Development Block Grant action plan, which addresses ways to improve the lives of low- and moderate-income residents in the community and increases the city's safety and attractiveness.  

A meeting will be held in-person and online on Tuesday from 5:30 p.m.

Those able to attend in person will meet in Council Chambers at City Hall.

City leaders drafted the plan after gathering input from members of the public and agencies who serve the needs of low- and moderate-income clients.

Residents and agencies expressed needs that relate to the following categories:

  • Housing needs - focus on meeting the needs of residents for safe, sanitary and affordable housing
  • Homeless needs - help agencies meet the needs of Elkhart residents experiencing homelessness
  • Non-homeless special needs - help agencies meet the needs of Elkhart residents with special needs, including seniors, those with a disability and those living with HIV/AIDs
  • Economic development needs - improve the earning potential and wealth building of low- and moderate-income residents
  • Neighborhood development needs - improve neighborhood business districts, infrastructure and public parks and facilities to improve the quality of life of Elkhart's central neighborhoods
