Classic dragster stolen in La Porte County garage burglary

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office needs your help to bring a burglar to justice!

On Sunday, Nov. 12, sheriff's deputies were called to the 3500 north block of U.S. Highway 35 about a burglary of a detached garage.

When officers arrived on the scene to investigate, they determined that some time between 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12, the garage was broken into and several items were stolen.

The most valuable of the missing items included a modified racing car -- a purple 1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo!

Aside from its distinctive appearance, the racecar also has a white sticker on the top of the front windshield that reads, "NMCA DRAG RACING."

The vehicle had no license plate, but the VIN number has been entered into a State and National law enforcement computerized database that identifies a vehicle as stolen.

A blue Miller portable MIG welder was also taken from the garage.

The value of the stolen items exceeds $21,000.

The Sheriff's Office hopes that a member of the community may have witnessed a suspicious person or vehicle near the site of the burglary, or the classic dragster being removed from the area.

Anyone having information about the burglary or stolen racecar are asked to call lead investigator Andy Hynek at (219) 326-7700, or (219) 879-3530, ext. 2401.
