Coast Guard rip current warnings

The U.S. Coast Guard post in St Joseph is warning boaters and swimmers to exercise extreme caution when going in Lake Michigan on Wednesday.

They are expecting 8-foot waves until Wednesday evening.

Red flags are out at Silver Beach. Swimming is prohibited.

Steven Ruh, the post Commander, says energy from the waves makes rip currents stronger. He says the force of the currents is more than five miles per hour. Even the strongest swimmer would not be able to fight that current.

If you are in a rip current, swim parallel to the beach, rather than towards it.

ABC 57 will have full report tonight at 6 p.m.
