United States Coast Guard shows what to do if someone falls through ice

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. – Imagine being immersed in an icy, frightening scenario where you or someone you love falls through the ice of a lake, pond, or river.

Would you know what to do?

That very question was answered Tuesday by the United States Coast Guard during an ice water rescue class at the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA.

The USCG stressed that “no ice is safe ice.”

If you were to fall into icy cold waters, remember the 1-10-1 Rule: “One minute to control your breathing, ten minutes of meaningful movement and one hour of consciousness.”

The next thing you should do is call 911.

According to the YMCA, students were able to get their hands on some of the gear and become junior ice rescuers.
