Coloma man dead in train accident

HARTFORD TOWNSHIP - A Coloma 19-year-old is dead after a train hit his car around 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

According to a release from the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department, Zachariah Zellmer was driving over the crossing on 52nd Ave just east of CR 687 in Hartford Township, Van Buren County.

The Amtrak train from Chicago attempted to brake but was unable to do so in time. Police say the impact pushed Zellmers vehicle a considerable distance down the Railroad tracks.

The Amtrak train did have working bells, lights and whistles at the time of the crash. The crossing at 52nd Avenue does have working RxR lights and Control Arms for the railroad crossing.

Police are continuing to investigate.
