Completion of Smart Streets Phase One means new roundabouts open

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -

After months of construction, Phase One of the South Bend Smart Streets initiative is finally complete. Drivers can finally get through areas of the city that were blocked off to make room for roundabouts.

Three new roundabouts are running into Michigan and Main Street. Some of those streets will now be hosting two way traffic. You'll also notice some new walkways for pedestrians, runners and bikers.

Phase 2 is still underway. That means construction downtown is still ongoing. It will continue through November, but take a break for home football game weekends.

Officials recommend you start your commute early to learn the new traffic patterns.
