Compost fire in La Porte smolders for fourth day

NOW: Compost fire in La Porte smolders for fourth day

LAPORTE, Ind. -- A massive compost fire near the LaPorte County Fairgrounds was still smoldering as of Wednesday evening, with fire crews working around the clock since Sunday afternoon.

The flames have taken plenty of time and resources to extinguish, including nearly 10 million gallons of water that have been used in the effort so far.

Wednesday, due to wind and smoke, firefighters switched directions breaking up the compost pile to help keep the fire, that is believed to have started from spontaneous combustion, under control.

An air quality alert from LaPorte County Emergency Management remains in effect, as heavy smog, believed to be non-toxic, continues to fill the air.

Residents, especially those with breathing conditions, are being advised to stay indoors and avoid the smoke.

Exhausted fire crews, working 24-hour shifts, say the strong support from the community is getting them through.

“These guys are tired, but they’re getting her done,” said Assistant Chief Kelly Burke with the La Porte Fire Department.

Crews hope to fully extinguish the fire in the next day or two, but will stick around through the week, along with the air quality alert.
