County receives grant to improve polling location accessibility

St. Joseph County was just awarded a grant from the state so it can meet the requirements of the federal Help America Vote Act.

The county received just over $7,000.

The money will go towards improving accessibility throughout the county, including two handicap operable doors for one polling location.

"It helps those who have a little trouble opening heavy doors or those who are in wheelchairs or use walkers to come to vote, so that they can get into the polling place easier," said Terri J. Rethlake, the St. Joseph County Clerk of the Circuit Court.

Other counties across the state that received the grants will add wheelchair ramps, special parking pads and automatic doors.
