NOW: Couple allegedly involved in fatal hit and run turn themselves in

 ELKHART COUNTY, Ind.- The Elkhart fatal hit and run suspects are now in custody. Leonard and Penelope Grosswiler will face a judge on December 28. 

On Wednesday, the Grosswilers turned themselves into the Elkhart County jail. 

Sergeant Chris Snyder tells ABC57, to his knowledge Elkhart Police has not come in contact with either of them.

Almost four months after this deadly accident, the two suspects finally came forward. 

40-year-old Penelope Grosswiler, the alleged driver, and her husband 42-year-old Leonard Grosswiler walked into the Elkhart County Correctional Facility around noon. 

They were booked just one day after Prosecutor Vicki Becker came forward with new details on this fatal accident that took the lives of three and injured two others. 


22-year-old Shawn Wilcott, 8 month old Dolly Smith and 11-year-old Courtney Smith were killed. 22-year-old Bradley Smith and Allison Smith were hurt. 

ABC57 contacted one of Leonard’s co-workers  who says he was just at work last week. 

The property manager of the home where this couple lived says the home is now for sale and it’s actually been on the market since November 15. 

Penelope is being held at a $100,000 bond, while her husband is being held on a $10,000 bond.
