Crash following police chase shuts down intersection in downtown South Bend

UPDATE: 

The South Bend Police Department confirm that the crash followed a police chase overnight. 

Officials said they were responding to a domestic call and when they arrived, the suspect took off. A police chase started shortly after, which ended in a crash south of the intersection of North Michigan Street and LaSalle Avenue in downtown South Bend. 

Police said the driver of the vehicle crashed and went down an embankment but did not go into the river. 

Officials said the driver was transported to the hospital in critical condition. 

Crews are currently waiting to remove the vehicle and hope to reopen roads nearby the scene shortly.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A crash has shut down a busy intersection in downtown South Bend overnight. 

The crash happened at the intersection of North Michigan Street and LaSalle Avenue around 12:30 a.m. 

ABC57 News has a team at the scene, and they said that multiple roads around that intersection have been blocked off. 

They also reported seeing the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team at the scene.
