Crash into cement mailbox sends one to the hospital

ELKHART, Ind. – The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash in Elkhart on the east side of the city at 11:25 a.m. Friday. The crash happened on Jackson Boulevard near Middleton Run Road.

According to officials, Melvin Schrock II, 40 of Elkhart, was driving east on Jackson Boulevard when his vehicle veered to the right and went off the road.

Schrock’s 2004 Kia Spectre then struck a mailbox with a large cement base head-on, causing heavy front end damage to the car.

Schrock complained of pain in his shoulder and ribs and was subsequently sent to Elkhart General Hospital.

Schrock was wearing his seat belt.

The crash is still under investigation.
