SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Crews battled a fire at a home that was converted into apartments on South Bend's west side.
Firefighters were called to the 2600 block of West Huron Street around 2:30 Friday morning.
They arrived to find flames and smoke coming from the back of the structure.
Crews went inside, but had to pull back after what firefighters call a "smoke explosion" occurred on the second floor.
"We went to a defensive posture from the exterior due to the changing conditions, and put the fire out that way," said South Bend Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Lagodney.
No firefighters were hurt, and everyone living in the building got out okay.
The building was badly damaged.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
