ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart and St. Joseph County officials have confirmed the identity of a body found in the St. Joseph River Saturday morning.
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department has identified the body as 53-year-old Roberto Vasquez who had been reported missing on Thursday.
"A homeowner spotted him across the river, they called fire department and police," said Mike Samp, a coroner with St. Joseph County. "They were able to bring him out the water on this side of the river."
The call came in around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. St. Joseph County Sherriff's Department, Coroner's Office, and Penn Township Fire and EMT were at the scene by 10:03 a.m.
His car had been found abandoned on a bridge in Osceola. He was last seen around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday.
The coroner has been on scene and says the body will be taken to Ft. Wayne for an autopsy.
