Crime rate statistics are in for South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- The crime statistics are now in for the month of July and, to many people's surprise, overall crime in the city is down.

The number of robberies, car thefts, and home burglaries have all decreased since this time last year.

"The incidents of residential burglaries are down. That's a big deal and when you look at the other categories...that's something that has the potential to affect every single citizen in South Bend," said Captain Phil Trent of the South Bend Police Department.

There is a downside to the statistics released, however; the number of murders, rapes, and aggravated assaults have increased in the last year.
