NOW: Day one of Notre Dame football fall camp in the books with players already standing out

SOUTH BEND, Ind -- Sam Hartman leads the QB room with Steve Angeli as his backup, plus a handful of standout receivers for the upcoming season.

For the first time in years there is no quarterback controversy.

Sam Hartman is QB number one and sophomore Steve Angeli is the clear number two.

Quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli has done a great job getting his room together, as they looked in sync and on the same page on day one.

Angeli was impressive, poised, and made some good connections with receivers Rico Flores, Braylon James, and tight end Holden Staes.

As expected, Hartman showed his leadership presence on the field.

"I've talked with Sam about, it's hard to truly lead when you're in a quarterback battle, to be the leader and what you've seen from the time that he's realized he's the quarterback, is his leadership amongst that offensive unit has continued to just excel. What that creates is what we call that unit strength and it's that buy in, it's that emotional factor, that I don't want to let this guy down, I don't want to let this leader down. I see that amongst the offense. I said this, probably two weeks ago, in my two years here, man, this is maybe the closest group players I've seen," head coach Marcus Freeman said.

Freeman also said he feels confident in both Angeli and Kenny Minchey and has decided there's no need to go to the transfer portal to bring in another quarterback.

The confidence in the quarterback room could have something to do with Chris Tyree.

The senior is listed as a running back on the depth chart, but he only took reps as a wide receiver on day one and gives the receiver room a boost against a loaded defensive back group.

"If you talk to the wideouts they kill the defensive backs, you talk to DB's, they killed the wideouts," Freeman added.

One of the biggest question marks of this season is who will replace Michael Mayer as tight end.

Tomorrow on day two of fall camp, we'll hear from the tight ends group and new offensive coordinator Gerad Parker.
