Deals offered throughout downtown South Bend for Small Business Saturday
SOUTH BEND, Ind.—Small Business Saturday in downtown South Bend promises deals and prizes for shoppers throughout the day, all in an effort to support driving local economic success.
A Downtown South Bend Welcome Station will be located in the new Howard Park Community Building at 219 S. St. Louis Blvd from 9 a.m. to noon on November 30.
Shoppers who visit the welcome station can pick up a Shop Small bag and a list of deals and promotions. There will also be giveaways, coffee, donuts, pastries and a photo booth at the welcome station.
One of the businesses participating in this year’s event, Brain Lair Bookstore on Jefferson Boulevard, celebrated its first year in business in July. This will be its second time participating in Small Business Saturday.
“In order for us to keep this vibrancy and life in the community, we have to come out, we have to support small businesses. Shop Small is just one day but we should come to these stores all the time,” said Brain Lair owner Kathy Burnette. “Where will you find another Ali’s? You won’t. You won’t find another Beehives, so just remember that what adds flavor to a town is its small businesses.”
Burnette thinks that the reopening of Howard Park will draw more people in to her shop, which is just down the road from South Bend's oldest park.
“I’m excited to see new life come back to downtown,” Burnette said.
The Brain Lair will also be hosting a book reading and signing with South Bend native and author Valerie Burns, who writes under the name V.M. Burns. The reading will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Burns, who writes “cozy mystery” novels, hopes to see people out supporting small businesses on Saturday.
“Support others who are trying to stay viable in the city. I think supporting authors and people who come to the community really encourages others and I think reading is so important,” Burns said.
Burns released a new novel earlier in the week and it’s set in southwestern Michigan.
