Deputies in La Porte County apprehend fugitive during traffic stop

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. – The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23-year-old Lanard Edwards of Michigan City on Wednesday during a traffic stop. Edwards had a warrant out for his arrest and he was in possession of a firearm without a permit.

The traffic stop occurred around 12:30 a.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy observed that Edwards had disregarded a stop sign at the intersection of Grand Beach Road and El Portal Drive, prompting the deputy to perform a traffic stop.

A 9mm handgun was subsequently located in the vehicle being driven by Edwards.

Deputies then determined that there was no permit for the handgun and that Edwards was a wanted fugitive.

Edwards was taken into custody at the La Porte County Jail.

He was booked for the following charges:

  • Warrant, Battery Level 6 Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm Without a Permit, A-Misdemeanor

Edwards has been jailed without bond.
