Developer has new plans for former Studebaker building

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- New life and new jobs could be in store for a South Bend landmark.

Plans are in the works to turn one of the old Studebaker buildings into a technology center.

South Bend Developer Kevin Smith said he is working with the city to renovate Studebaker Building 84 for use as a data center.

Smith said the project, which includes a centralized power system, would attract big companies with sufficient power, connectivity and space.

"I just felt it's time for the people within the community to stand up and show that we're very capable of being innovative and things on a national and international scale," said Smith.

Smith said that there is already interest in the project from outside the South Bend area. They hope to start construction in a few weeks.
