DMV investigators crack Craigslist car scheme

FRESNO, Calif -- DMV investigators cracked a big Craigslist car scheme where police say hundreds of cars sold online were tampered with.

They found more than 30 odometers marked with tape indicating rolled back mileage.

"The average we saw was anywhere from 200,000 to 300,000 miles on the vehicle had all been rolled back to 100,000 or less," said DMV Central Area Commander Tom Wilson.

Buying a car with an odometer rolled back is a big safety hazard because most cars are serviced based on their mileage.

If you are buying a car, it is important to do your homework ahead of time. Something as simple as a Car-Fax will tell you what the vehicle's mileage should be and if it has ever been salvaged.
