18-year-old Dowagiac man charged with multiple felonies after Friday shooting

DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- The Dowagiac Police Department has a suspect in custody after a shooting took place Friday night in the 300 block of W. Telegraph Street. 

Police say the call came in at roughly 11:20 p.m. on Nov. 22, and when officers responded to the area they found one victim with a gunshot wound.

"During the course of the investigation, officers learned the incident began when three individuals were physically fighting each other," authorities said. "During the assault the suspect produced a handgun that he had on his person concealed and began shooting at the victim. The suspect then fled from the scene on foot.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Marcus Haskins, of Dowagiac, and taken into custody without incident shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Haskins was arraigned on the following charges in Cass County:

  • 2 counts of assault with intent to murder,
  • 2 counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm, Dangerous Weapon- Carrying with unlawful intent,
  • 2 counts of assault with a dangerous weapon,
  • 5 counts of Felony firearm.

His bond was set at $300,000, and, as of noon on Nov. 27, he is currently lodged in the Cass County Jail.

"The Dowagiac Police Department would like to thank Pokagon Tribal Police Department, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Cass County Drug Enforcement Team, and SMCAS Ambulance service for their assistance in this incident," DPD said.
