Dowagiac Police use Narcan to save overdose victim

DOWAGIAC, Mich. -

Dowagiac Police officers were called to a residence on April 6 around 5:30 p.m. for a report of a possible overdose.

Officers said the subject was in a serious medical emergency and was having difficulty breathing.

Officers determined the subject may have taken an opiate based substance and administered Narcan.

The subject was taken to the hospital and released later that evening.

Officers say the investigation revealed the person did accidentally overdose on heroin and would have died without the Narcan.

Dowagiac Police officers began carrying Narcan in December 2015. It was the first time Dowagiac officers have used it.
