Driver killed after vehicle strikes tree, catches fire

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- The driver of a pickup truck died Sunday evening after his vehicle struck a tree and caught fire, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

Around 5 p.m., deputies and the Mattawan Fire Department responded to the 65000 block of CR 652 for the fiery crash.

Despite efforts from good Samaritans who stopped to help the driver, the 26-year-old man died at the scene.

The investigation revealed the driver was traveling around curves in the roadway when he lost control and struck a tree, deputies said.

Deputies believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
