Driver killed in collision with Amtrak train
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- One person was killed in a crash with an Amtrak train in Michigan City early Thursday morning.
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. to the railroad crossing at Eastwood and Tryon roads.
When officers arrived they found the 67-year-old driver of a white 2014 Honda Accord deceased.
Police said the driver of the Accord was traveling eastbound on Tryon Road when the car crashed the railroad tracks and collided with the westbound Amtrak train that was traveling 59 miles per hour.
There were 198 passengers and 4 crew members on the train at the time of the crash. There were no injuries on the train.
The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The Michigan City Bus Department assisted in taking passengers to the South Shore station. Amtrak also brought a bus to the scene to help transport passengers.
