The driver who pleaded guilty to charges related to a fatal hit and run accident in October 2015 was sentenced Wednesday.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office says 38-year-old Mark Madejek was sentenced to a total of 8 years in prison.
Madejek was driving on SR23 when he struck pedestrian Stephen Stetz, 27, then left the scene. The accident happened on October 17, 2015.
Madejek was charged a few days later.
Madejek pleaded guilty on January 6, 2016 to leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, driving while suspended resulting in serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and driving while suspended resulting in death.
The judge entered a judgment of conviction for leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and driving while suspended resulting in death.
The judge did not enter a judgment of conviction on the counts of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury and driving while suspended resulting in serious bodily injury. The prosecutor's office says the two counts would have merged with the other two counts at sentencing.
He was sentenced to 6 years in prison for Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death and one year for Driving While Suspended Resulting in Death.
He was also sentenced to one year in prison for a parole violation.
All sentences were ordered to be served consecutively, for a total of 8 years in prison.
