BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. – The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office has issued important back-to-school reminders for drivers.
When students are boarding a bus and the stop arm is out motorists must come to a complete stop at least 20 feet away.
The first rule to remember is slow down when you see yellow or red school bus lights flashing.
Extreme caution is necessary because children are unpredictable when boarding or getting off of a bus. If a driver does pass a school bus when the stop arm is out they are breaking the law.
Safety reminders for students include always walk on sidewalks when getting ready to cross the street near a bus.
Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before trying to step on board.
When walking next to a bus you should stay at least ten feet away and do not walk behind the school bus until it pulls away.
