DTSB offering free summer fitness classes
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. --Summer is always a good time to get outside and stay active. For several years Downtown South Bend has provided residents in Michiana a free outdoor summer fitness series that are led by local instructors from the Michiana area. In light of the coronavirus pandemic, they’ve implemented some changes to the program.
Downtown South Bend has partnered with Beacon Health and Fitness to bring the Summer Fitness Program to residents every Saturday starting July 4 to the Gridiron in downtown South Bend.
“These are open to all levels of experience, and there is a variety of ages and it’s not just all ladies, we do have some men who come do yoga and Zumba. So, it’s opened to everyone. We also do have sometimes, people will bring their kids,” said Kylie Carter, the Downtown South Bend Marketing and Events Director.
Classes include Zumba, yoga, and a variety class, during the last hour that switches off from the fit camp, boot camp, cardio, or Barre.
“I tell people to set a reminder on their phone, every noon on Monday, and register for fitness so that you can be sure to get your spot,” Carter said.
What used to be over 100 people showing up to the Gridiron for the free outdoor summer program, has now been capped at 50 participants per class. And that’s not the only change. There are 10 feet chalk circles that are six feet apart for people to exercise in. They also no longer provide mat rentals
“We use to have a binder of wavers that people would sign when they came. Now, we do that electronically, they sign it in advance so it’s contactless as possible,” Carter said.
The Summer Fitness Series runs until August 29. Classes start every Saturday with yoga at 8 a.m. Zumba at 9 a.m. and other classes at 10 a.m. If you want to register for the next weeks class visit https://www.downtownsouthbend.com/summer-fitness-series
