Elkhart County Sheriff's Department releases new details in a fatal hit and run crash

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department releases new details in a fatal hit and run crash that happened Monday morning.

There were two vehicles involved and one of the drivers left the scene before deputies arrived. 

Investigators believe the vehicle that left that scene after hitting 32-year-old Eric Pendleton was a dark colored, 2011 or 2012 Ford Escape.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, a white Nissan was traveling southbound on County Road 5, north of County Road 3 when the car struck Pendleton.

The crash happened at approximately 4:18 a.m.

Pendleton was walking southbound on County Road 5.

After being struck, Pendleton fell into the northbound lanes of County Road 5, at which time he was struck by another vehicle traveling northbound.

Police say Eric Pendleton was declared deceased at the scene as a result of the crash.

34-year-old Robert Moore of Niles, Mich., the driver of the southbound vehicle, was treated at the scene for minor lacerations and released.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department Crash Investigation Team is investigating the crash.
