Elkhart crews race cardboard boats race to help United Way

Cardboard isn't exactly the best material to build a boat with, but on Friday, it was the material of choice in Elkhart.  The cardboard boats tried to make their way in the water.

Friday’s boat race served as the kick-off to the United Way’s fundraising campaign.

"We want to just let people know that we're starting our campaign this year and we're excited about what's happening in our community and how we're working together as a community to address issues that our neighbors are facing,” said Bill Rieth, President and CEO United Way of Elkhart County.

Sixteen different organizations build boats this year with a variety of themes and costumes for the captain and crew.
