Elkhart Fire Department provides update to Saturday's salvage yard fire
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – The Elkhart Fire Department was dispatched on Saturday at 2:50 pm at the 1700 block of Lusher Avenue for reports of an accidental large exterior auto salvage yard fire.
No injuries were reported, according to the department. It is also unclear how much damage was done to the scrap yard.
When crews arrived, they saw heavy black smoke and an active fire coming from a large pile of debris. The first truck at the scene was able to put water on the fire, but due to the size of the fire and winds, more water was needed.
Due to the winds and strength of the fire, it spread to a nearby rail yard, lighting railroad ties on fire.
The Baugo Township Fire Department and the Concord Township Fire Department were requested to help put out the flames. The three departments were able to extinguish the fire in three hours.
The Elkhart Fire Department would like to extend its gratitude to the Baugo and Concord departments for their help with the fire.
