Elkhart man arrested for several charges after stealing a police vehicle
ELKHART, Ind. -- A man who allegedly stole an Elkhart Police patrol car Friday has been taken into custody.
An Elkhart officer stopped to help the suspect on Friday afternoon when he appeared to have car trouble.
The officer spoke to the driver who allegedly seemed nervous and appeared to give false information.
When the officer tried to detain the suspect, he resisted and then ran away on foot.
The officer and another arriving officer chased the suspect, Cameron McCain, 23, on foot through several yards before being lead back to the area with the vehicles.
McCain then entered a police vehicle and proceeded to drive away.
Officials were able to track the police vehicle to an area near the 1400 block of West Lusher Ave where it had been abandoned.
Police conducted a search and were able to find McCain’s identity and an old address which they investigated.
McCain was arrested at a residence in the 1300 block of Fieldhouse Ave.
McCain detained for the following:
- Theft of a firearm
- Auto theft
- Unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon
- Resisting law enforcement (on foot and in a vehicle)
- Refusal to identify
- Unlawful entry into a vehicle during the commission of a crime
- Reckless driving,
- Leaving the scene of a crash
- Driving while suspended
