Elkhart man shot in his home by suspect possibly walking by outside

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department is actively investigating a shooting on Sunday in the 400 block of State Street.

"On March 3, shortly after 1 a.m., Elkhart Police Department officers dispatched and arrived in the 400 block of State Street in response to a 911 caller reporting a shooting with injuries," the EPD said. "Upon arrival, officers entered a downstairs apartment at 422 State Street and rendered first aid to an injured male victim. Medics transported the victim, 40 years old, to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. The victim has been subsequently treated and released."

Police believe this is an isolated incident and the initial investigation indicates that shot(s) fired from outside the house entered the residence and struck the victim.

They say the suspect involved in this incident was also possibly on foot.

"Elkhart Police Department detectives continue to actively investigate and are asking for the public’s help," the EPD said. "If you live in this area and have cameras that might have captured part of this incident (particularly between 12:40 a.m. and 1 a.m.), please contact Det. Claeys at 574-389-4789. Anonymous tips can also be made by calling Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP. We will provide further updates as we are able to do so."
